If you’re from the Midwest like I am, you’ve probably known about Top the Tater for a long time. If not, welcome to the creamy deliciousness that is this sour cream and onion-esque dip that is a staple at birthdays, Super bowl parties, potlucks, and picnics alike!
Top the Tater tends to run a little expensive, so I decided to find a way to make my own Homemade Top the Tater Dip, save a little cash, and tailor it to my liking with ingredients that you probably have sitting in your fridge and pantry.
This recipe calls for both sour cream and cream cheese for the base, but if you’re in a pinch, just sour cream will do.
Here’s what you’ll need to gather:
- Sour Cream
- Cream Cheese
- Garlic Salt (or garlic powder and salt)
- Onion Powder
- Lemon Juice
- Chives
- A bowl
- A stirring utensil
Tip: Make sure you take your cream cheese out of the fridge a little ahead of time so it comes to room temp. If you don’t remember (like me), just pop it in the microwave in a bowl for 30 seconds.
Let’s Make It!
- 8oz of Cream Cheese
- 1 cup of Sour Cream
- 1 tsp Garlic Salt (or 1/2 tsp each of Garlic Powder and Salt)
- 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
- 1 tsp Lemon Juice
- Chives for garnish – fresh or dried (optional)
Add all ingredients to your bowl and mix. Yup, that’s it!
It’s a small effort for such a delicious dip that you’ll probably go through in one night.
How To Use Your Homemade Top the Tater Dip
I personally love to pair mine with some cheddar and sour cream chips for some extra cheese flavor.
Some other great options are:
- A dollop on your potato (cuz….Top the Tater haha)
- On Nachos
- In A Layered Taco Dip
- To DIP ALL THE THINGS!
If you can resist eating all of your Homemade Top the Tater Dip in the first 15min, it gets even better after being the fridge for a couple hours. And even BETTER overnight as the flavors have a chance to really meld and intensify.
